General information about working on a working holiday visa in Kerikeri
Everybody arrives at Hone Heke Lodge Kerikeri with different plans.
For us to help you best please be open and honest with us about how long you are looking to work, your plans and any experience you may have – as well as anything else we need to know (i.e. allergies to bees/latex, sore back, bad knee etc -this helps us to find the most suitable job for you)
All this has a bearing on what jobs we will allocate you – as some employers want people for a certain amount of time/ have certain requirements.
We always try and match the right people for the right job but please remember it can be any type of work you will be asked to do. When you arrive and tell us that you are looking for work we will then say yes to the jobs on your behalf – so we then expect you to take what you are offered.
There are 3 kinds of jobs – day jobs, longer term jobs & jobs you find yourselves
Day Jobs
We are approached every day for people to do day jobs. These jobs vary from gardening, moving furniture, cleaning, painting etc. In most cases if you do a great job that day job leads to more work. We always get feedback about how you’ve done too because if you have done a good job we always find you more work if available. Most people enjoy these jobs as you work with local people – although they are usually physical work. Think of them as a free ‘work out’!
Seasonal Work
We have formed some very close relationships since we started here in 2014 and we are the first hostel people call if they need workers. This is very important because it means our backpackers are rarely waiting for work for long.
There are many types of seasonal jobs. Orchards, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, shops, farms & more. They will usually be looking for people who can guarantee to stay for a certain period of time. (some up to 3 months+ but not always – again -please be honest with us & them)
Jobs you find yourselves
You are also more than welcome to look for jobs yourself because that increases your chance of finding work.

So, our advice to you is:
Be honest with us about your plans
Show us your great personalities & willingness to work
Be up and around early if you want day jobs
(we say yes to people knowing that we have people here to work!)
Take ANY work offered
Don’t be scared to ask us for work (as it shows us you are keen)
Always be ready to leave on time
START times -be there before you are due to start!
Always have the right equipment eg -hat,sunscreen,lunch,boots,rain coat, WATER etc
ALWAYS speak English
Especially if you are working with others from the same country.
If you are all talking another language with an English supervisor it is just RUDE. So please DO NOT….you are here to learn English.
Always SMILE and be happy to have a job.
Always be polite – even if you don’t agree with what the other person says.
Leave your mobile phone in your bag or at the hostel!!!
Always take overtime hours
If you have a job and you decide to leave it at any time – PLEASE LET US KNOW so we can try and get someone else in to work there.

We are a family run hostel. We live onsite with our children and close to our many wonderful neighbours. We pride ourselves on having a clean, safe and comfortable hostel where you can enjoy staying while you work – in essence we try and create a “home away from home” for you while you work hard and save money.
Just so you are aware we have a 10.30pm shut down of communal areas to allow everybody to get a good night’s sleep. You are more than welcome to go to town after this time but please remember our family, neighbours and other guests when you return. We also have a strict NO DRUGS policy.
